“I had one idea that never changed in my mind—that you should use your wealth to help people.”
Charles F. Feeney
Feeney Way at Cornell Tech honors and celebrates Charles F. “Chuck” Feeney, Cornell Class of 1956, whose $350 million founding gift for Cornell Tech—made through his foundation, The Atlantic Philanthropies—stands as one of the most generous ever for higher education.
A self-made entrepreneur who co-founded Duty Free Shoppers in 1960, Feeney became one of the world’s greatest and most inspirational philanthropists. He was one of the earliest proponents of the “giving while living” philosophy, encouraging people of means to give away the majority of their wealth during their lifetimes. His thousands of grants through The Atlantic Philanthropies, exceeding $8 billion over four decades, supported people and causes around the world, from education and human rights to medical research, health equity, peacemaking, and social justice. Nearly $1 billion of this giving, made mostly anonymously, came to Cornell—transforming the university, raising our collective sights for its future, and making him Cornell’s most generous donor.
As the main thoroughfare at Cornell Tech, Feeney Way runs through the very heart of our campus—and charts a path to inspire future generations of Cornellians to follow in Chuck’s footsteps by giving back to their communities in whatever ways they can. In naming Feeney Way, Cornell remembers Chuck Feeney as an example for philanthropy and for life.
